History

Our company history stretches back to the early days of paper distribution and manufacturing in Canada.

While we continue to transform our business with new ideas and technologies, we never lose sight of our proud heritage of serving customers.

Ariva traces its beginnings to some of the most respected, successful, and innovative companies in the history of North American paper distribution:

  • Buntin Reid The Paper House, founded in 1856, a leader in Ontario's paper and graphic arts communities
  • JBR La Maison du Papier, dating back to 1843, Québec's leading paper supplier
  • The Paper House, with a history in Atlantic Canada going back to 1895
  • Over the years, these regional companies were purchased by Domtar and operated under the umbrella of the Domtar Distribution Group, the premier provider of printing paper and packaging solutions in Canada.

In 2010, the regional operations came together to operate under one organization and the company was rebranded as Ariva. The name Ariva, derived from 'arrive', builds on the strength of the individual companies arriving to form one solutions provider to customers requiring printing substrates and packaging supplies. Our name exemplifies what we do every day, to manage with best in class service the on time arrival of over 2,000,000 orders annually for our customers across Canada.

In the face of all the changes and challenges in today's business world, Ariva remains proud of its past and focused on the future— by being agile, caring and innovative.
